Paia – Fun town. Nearly every store is quirky and fun. Some touristy-blech, but mostly it's free-range, organic, grass-fed bananas, hemp fabrics, boutiques featuring the work of local artists and a lot of trippy-hippy-boho-surfer flavor. Also some eccentrics and loonies. The good kind.
Makawao – Old Hawaiian cowboy town. Fun place with a few neat shops. Discover a gem of a deli/coffee place in a hidden courtyard.
Kahului – nothing unique, just the ‘big’ stores. Great for staples and supplies, definitely not for experiencing local small business. Come here for Costco, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowe's.
Wailea – an hour away but all the high end retailers (Tiffany’s, Dolce Gabbana, etc)
Hilo Hattie’s Kihei or Lahaina – good for gifts with a Hawaiian flair
ABC Stores – Lahaina on Front Street or in the Cannery.
